Some of you may be interested in entering the cover art contest for the next Trailerhead album by Immediate. This album will be the third volume of the Trailerhead series and it will be called Trailerhead: Triumph. The contest, announced in February by Immediate, will take place very soon.

Anticipating this event, and willing to help the future candidates, Immediate shared a medley on Facebook, to give fans an idea of what Triumph will be like. The album is far from being released, but this medley already gives us an excellent preview of what the third Trailerhead  opus will be like – grandiose, epic, majestic, like its predecessors!

“So we are getting REALLY close to announcing the “Trailerhead: Triumph Album Cover Art Contest”.” Immediate says. “In the meantime, we’re posting a medley of only some of the tracks that will feature on the album. Hopefully, this will start giving some of you early birds ideas to kick around. This is going to be a really interesting album! The tracks in the preview are still the original Immediate Music cuts before undergoing the “Trailerhead” treatment. We’re not ready to release those yet. Another album that hasn’t been mentioned on TMN yet.

Trailer Backends 2 was released in 2011 by Cinetrax and can now be explored and licensed on the Ravenwood site as well as the BeatboxMD site. According to BeatboxMD, if features “huge orchestra and choir with an epic trailer sound.  Edgy, hybrid cues with a contemporary cinematic sound.” Tracks like “From the Ashes”, “Prelude to Cataclysm”, “Epic Ascent”, or “In the Name of Honor” confirm that!

Trailer Backends 2 was composed by Daniel and Jonathan Cossu, Steve Rucker, and Robert Johnson.

On a side note, a new album has been announced on the Cinetrax site: Modern Action 2. It will be released soon.

It isn’t really a recent album, but it hasn’t been mentioned on TMN yet.

Released in 2011, Hybrid Electro-Orchestral is a collection of cues that will perfectly fit trailers; some are orchestral, others are hybrid, combining electronic sounds, orchestra, and choir.

This collection feature epic action and adventure tracks such as “Last Stand” and “Enemy at the Gates”; percussive tracks; ethereal compositions like “Ad Eternam”; moving and romantic tracks like “Far Away Lights” ; edgy and melodic ones like “Ambiguous”…

This album was composed by Jean-Baptiste Boclé.

Hybrid Electro-Orchestral is available for listening and licensing on the Ravenwood Music site and the BeatboxMD site.

X-Ray Dog’s latest addition is Beast Break, an action-packed album, featuring hybrid style cues that combine heavy guitars and orchestra. More precisely,  “modern cinematic industrial rock and electronica orchestral hybrid fused to explode in heroic super-hero action drama fantasy film trailers promos and extreme sports.”

Beast Break is divided in three sections: Adventure Epic Heroic, Dark Epic Heroic, and Action Dark Industrial.

It was composed by Chris Field, Beau Burchell, Steve Ouimette, Mitch Lijewski, Jasper Blunk, Brian Rogers (aka LeakyBrain), Benjamin Nils Kopec, Alistair Cooper, Inon Zur, and Guy Erez.

The Hollywood based G Empire released a second addition to its library, Hero. The debut album, Legendary City grounded a classic, epic music style which is reflected in Hero.

The album is featuring 18 cues incorporate the whole spectrum of heroism – “from intimate and romantic tales of heroism and love, to the driving and adrenaline inducing exultations of epic guitar and choir, Hero has it all.“

We asked one of the composers, Kelvin Galloza to share some details about Hero.

TMN:  What was your inspiration when you wrote the cues?
Kelvin Galloza: Well, HERO has been about a nine month collaboration between me and my partner Ryan Fisk and I think we can both agree that film music itself was the biggest inspiration we had when we were writing these cues. We are very grateful to be able to do this for a living and to us the greatest reward has been the great response we get from our fans and friends in the industry.

TMN:  Can you share some stories of creating this album?
Kelvin Galloza: The making of the album was a terrific experience. From live recordings to the countless hours spent sitting in our studios, I can honestly say we had a blast. And even though we had several moments of frustration, overall it was kind of like being a little kid in a toy store, we had a lot of fun.

TMN: Which is your favorite track? Why?
Kelvin Galloza:  To me, my favorite cue has to be Conqueror because of the epic journey it takes you on. Ryan’s favorite cue is Tonight We Invade to which he describes as the perfect combination of epic adventure and romance. (You can find the preview of conqueror at the 1:55 mark in the medley and Tonight We Invade is at the 0:37 mark)

TMN:  In your opinion what makes this album unique?
Kelvin Galloza:Well with HERO we didn’t want to pen ourselves into any one specific style. We wanted the album to reflect a taste of the entire “Heroic Spectrum”, and in our opinion we accomplished that. The final product offers a cue for every hero based film: from ethnic to sci-fi and everything in between. Also, we think this library brings a sound that is in a way still very unexplored. We’d like to think that the cues in HERO do a good job of telling a familiar story in a universal language that we can all understand. In doing this, we hope HERO can make it easier for our friends in the Motion Picture Advertising world to establish a stronger emotional connection between the audience and the project that will ultimately increase release anticipation.

TMN:  What kind of movies would your tracks advertise the best?
Kelvin Galloza:We think HERO can fit anything from intimate and romantic movies to the driving, adrenaline pumping blockbusters we all love to see.

Quantum is the latest orchestral addition to the Immediate Music catalog, featuring epic action and drama cues. 

“Quantum…..our current release of cutting edge, orchestral and hybrid music for the motion picture advertising industry…..that means TRAILERS!!” Immediate Music says.

Immediate Music has also shared a making-of: “Short film created by Amit Goren showing Immediate Music’s Yoav Goren and engineer Greg Townley, along with a small army of Czech musicians and technicians, in central Prague recording material for Immediate’s epic 2012 production “Quantum”. Project produced by Yoav Goren and Jeffrey Fayman.” You can even see Yoav Goren eat an apple at the end of the video – eating apples can be sometimes be epic.

TMN: Can you tell me more about this project?

TMN: How does it stand out from the ‘crowed’?
PS: ‘Prototype Scores’ approaches a project in a unique way. We divide it into sections. But it is not one unique talent who is working on it, rather several minds are joined in full effort, combining different tools to one shared goal. TMN: When will be your debut album released?

The Movie Soundtrack 3, released by Atmosphere, offers several categories of tracks: Indie Thrillers, Action Pictures, Epic Features, Sinister Scenes, Sci-Fi Worlds, and Make Believe Adventures, with a total of twenty-six tracks.

This third opus is described as “the perfect soundtrack cue for your cinematic pictures!” 

Various composers worked on this album; among them, Inon Zur, Adam Saunders and Mark Cousins.

Nailed, the 11th album of Fired Earth Music discovers the blur border lines amongst rock, industrial sound and orchestra creating true hybrid sonority.

The album features 12 cues composed by Enrico Cacace and Justin Crosby. I would highlight “Bumper Lock” and “Chockepoint”. Both songs are dominated by orchestral sound – create a tense, excited atmosphere.

According to Fired Earth Music these songs perfectly fit to “urban car chase scene, raining bullets, explosions, shoot-outs and stunts” which means these also perfectly fit to my life! When I am driving too fast, shooting my friend during an epic laser tag battle and when I am trying to cook.

Nailed is different from previous releases, but it’s a fun listening!

Immediate Music has released a new album, called Epic Adventure. It features eleven epic and action-packed tracks, composed by many different artists, including Marcello De Francisci, Ryan Amon, Mark Petrie, John Graham, John Samuel Hanson, and, of course, Jeffrey Fayman and Yoav Goren.

This new album is described as “High octane, fully featured orchestral works with a sweeping epic sound.” 

Several of the tracks (those with “Trailer Beast” as publisher, obviously) are originally from the Trailer Beast series.

Future World Music’s eleventh volume, called Millennium, was released in March 2012.  It features two discs; the first one contains the main tracks, while the second one offers the no choir and alternate mixes.

With Millennium, Armen Hambar, the composer of the album, took a rather different and new path. Needless to say that album was highly anticipated by fans – as well as the industry, I guess.

Millennium turns out to be different from the previous volumes, and far from being disappointing. On the contrary!

The main characteristic of Millennium is that it offers many tracks with very uplifting tunes, tracks that build up in an incredible way, leading to intense climaxes, conveying and delivering a full range of emotions, tracks that will offer you a great listening experience, and will probably leave you… speechless. An excellent example of it is “Leap of Faith”, a beautiful cue that, as its title suggests, conveys hope, faith, achievement. In the same category, you may also like a lot “Victory of Life”, with an amazing build up and a truly epic ending; “The Big Reveal”, which reminds a bit of “Ascension” from Volume 7 – Evolution; “Spiritual Awakening”, the most contemplative track of the album, featuring beautiful female vocals… and “Millennium”, which, on the other hand, is a darker track, carried by a beautiful and haunting cello.

The second characteristic of Millennium is the presence of solo female vocals in most of the tracks. The best solos can be found in “Spiritual Awakening” and “Journey to Pandora”. These female vocals give a beautiful and ethereal touch to the tracks, and they are great addition to the orchestra, as they definitely highly contribute to the emotional impact of the music.

Millennium also contains more traditional tracks, with the old Future World Music style that we already know – and love! For example, adventure-packed tracks such as “Glorious Adventure”, that will probably remind you of the successful “Dream Chasers” from Vol. 10 – Immortal Empire. You will also find very epic tracks - Millennium opens with three epic pieces, among which the outstanding “Passion of Victory”. A few tracks later, there is the catchy “Anthem of the World”; then, “Attack of the Titans”, a mix of “some Hard Rock, Classical, Armenian roots and a touch of insanity” according to Armen Hambar. It is undoubtedly an original track, and the result is surprising.

You will even find a hybrid track, mixing orchestral and industrial sounds -“Rise of the Machines” –  and a nice musical chaos – “Epic Chaos”.

Millennium ends on a very emotional touch, through “Beautiful”, featuring moving female vocals, and Cara C. on violin – she does an excellent performance.

You might tell me that Millennium doesn’t contain as many “blasting” tracks as the previous Future World Music volumes do. It is true that there is an important proportion of uplifting and emotional tracks in comparison with other albums. These tracks may be a bit less “blasting” and epic – like “Leap of Faith” – but they have an incredible emotional impact. Furthermore, Millennium also offers truly epic tracks, such as “Passion of Victory” and “A Hero Will Rise”, just to name a few.

On a side note, you may notice that the titles perfectly match the cues – or is it the other way round – the cues perfectly matching their titles?

To conclude, Millennium is different from its predecessors, and went beyond my expectations. The strength and originality of this album certainly come from the fact that Armen Hambar managed to easily convey a whole range of emotions through his compositions. Millennium brings a fresh style of music to the Future World Music catalog, and doesn’t simply line up with the other albums. It stands out, with more intense and emotional tracks. Millennium is a wonderful listening experience, and, on the overall, a very good album.

Do you remember that scene of Futurama when Bender wants to open his own theme park after he was casted out from one on the Moon? “I’m going to go build my own theme park, with blackjack and hookers…” – he said – “In fact, forget the park!” This funny quote came into my mind when I first listened Simply Choir by Chappell.

You can spot the same concept at this album. “I am going to compose my own epic album with orchestra and choir… In fact forget the orchestra!” The remaining part is the very essence of epic music. The overwhelming choral sound dominate the whole sonority, reminding the Christian chants used to be heard in the churches. All the 19 songs composed by John Ashton Thomas featuring live choir. In April Dramatic Sport was not the only fresh epic release in KillerTracks library. War Stories, featuring 12 songs,  is organised thematically around three major topics, namely: Road to War, The Conflict, Peace or Annihilation.

War Stories is a comprehensive collection of epic tales told by orchestral masterpieces – according to KillerTracks’ description and our opinion: it is indeed! From the dramatic compositions of Road to War leads to the action based cues of The Conflict which finally ends in the heroic conclusions of Peace or Annihilation – the release offers a lot of epic experiences.

The album is a contribution of many notable composers such as Christian Telford, Davd Travis Edwards, Clinton Rusich, Metthew St. Laurent.

KillerTracks Network Music released many albums in April in a wide range of styles. Amongst jazz, pop, etnic, post rock albums appearad  Dramatic Sports that is not meant to bend with trailers (according to the title), but with shows where happens the most unimaginable dramas: sport. The tension, first, then the joy, second, when the team, you root for, wins requires songs as epic as hell.

Network Music holds the answer with epic, orchestral choral cues. The album featuring 13 intense tracks from composers such as David Travis Edwards, Mark Petrie, Gina Brigida, Christian Telford, Miles Hankins, Frederick Kron, Boris Nonte, Gregg Lehrman.  Click here to listen.

What is your favorite?

Immediate Music has released Dramatic Action, a compilation of  “epic and adventurous themes”  from their catalog. Actually, the tracks are all coming from the very sucessful Themes for Orchestra and Choir Vol. 3, which was released in 2008.

On a side note, Immediate Music has also released a collection of sound design cues called Evil Designs: a “dark and dangerous sound design” album, composed by Chris Jones and Flavio Lemelle.

Power and Glory is JW Media Music’s latest addition in the orchestral/action category.

While some tracks are calm and meditative, like “Beyond the Veil”, other are filled with action and heroism such as “Heroes of Legend”, “Strengh of Unity” and many more. You’ll also find uplifting compositions such as “To the Heavens”.

Torque, Music Junkies’ second public release, contains a high dose of hybrid and industrial music. Ruben Nava, owner of Music Junkies, gives us an outline of the creation of the company and the release of Torque.

Unlike its predecessor - Good Idea, Music Junkies‘ first public album which reunited some of the best epic cues mainly featuring orchestra and choir  -  Torque is very different and turned towards a hybrid and industrial style. It also offers epic cues such as “Brutal Revolution”, used in a John Carter TV spot as well as a Green Lantern TV spot:

“ROOTS

In 1988 fresh out of music school (Musician’s Institute) I started as a driver for a prominent trailer house, Aspect Ratio. I had some experience with audio gear & quickly moved into their sound dept. Once there I had access to many soundtracks not otherwise available to the general public. These scores contained recordings by some of my favorite musicians & former teachers. I dawned a pair of headphone & listened every chance I got.

My boss would often tour clients & the sound room with all its fancy gear, moving parts & lights was always a stopping point. I was warned not to listen to music on the job on several occasions. However, my obsession with scores persisted & I was fired. Luckily, they were shorthanded & needed an audio engineer so I was promptly re-hired. This went on to happen 2 more times.

BIRTH OF THE TRAILER MUSIC SUPERVISOR

Late one night I was asked to string-up the 1/4″ reel-to-reel & play a few soundtracks for the editor, producers & clients who were looking for music for their new comedy trailer The Naked Gun. It was not my place to weigh in & offer an opinion but I took the liberty of suggesting a track from an obscure library. The client heard it, loved it, sent it in for testing. It tested through the roof & from that point on I was never asked not to listen to music on the job. I spent the next 10 years as their music supervisor & other trailer houses eventually followed suit.

MUSIC JUNKIES, THE FIRST TRAILER MUSIC LIBRARY

By 1990 I had every music library in town at our facility & a mountain of scores from every studio. However, clearing a feature score for use in a trailer was expensive & time consuming. Library music, which catered to low budget advertisements, sounded “canned” & was rarely used. There was a giant gap in the market. I listened to many musician’s reels that had been submitted to me by composer looking to break into the trailer business & enlisted the help of the best sounding, most promising artists. Nick Phoenix (now with 2 Steps from Hell), Yoav Goren & Jeff Fayman (of Immediate Music) were among the first. I called these initial recordings “Epic” & “music for motion picture advertising”, phrases that are now part of trailer lexicon.

RISE OF THE RISE

In 1995 a young promising editor who was garnering many Key Art Awards asked if I could find him a piece of music that would rise in pitch like The Beatles “A Day in the Life” which would’ve been impossible to license. I found one such track on the DAT score for Dead Presidents. However, it couldn’t be cleared so I asked Jeff & Yo for a sound-a-like. We called it “A Day in the Rise” (hey we were on a tight deadline). A rising pitch audio sweetener is part of trailer history & every library in the world now has one.

MUSIC JUNKIES, OVER 4,000 TRAILERS & COUNTING 

Over the past few years we have recorded with several orchestras & choirs from around the world. Some of the highlights include 85 members of The London Symphony at Abbey Road Studios, The West Australian Philharmonic at ABC Studios Perth, The Louisville Chorus recorded at The Christ Church Cathedral built in 1822. Our music has been in over 4,000 trailers.

Announced several months ago, Audiomachine’s first public release, entitled Chronicles, is finally out. “We actually decided to do the public release because of the overwhelming amount of requests we got from all of you. We honestly weren’t thinking about that when we lanched the company – but, you are all pretty persuasive!” Audiomachine explains on Facebook.

Chronicles is a great compilation, which reunites some of the very best cues of the Audiomachine catalog. Many of them were featured in big movie advertising campaigns – I’m sure you all remember the famous Avatar trailer, using the wonderful “Akkadian Empire” and the now famous “Guardians at the Gate”.
