Two Steps From Hell reaches 5,000 Facebook fans! (we reach 178)
Trailer music companies and composers over the past year have really found a home on Facebook. Early on there just used to be a few, and they were mostly fan run. Now, most of them have some connection to the companies and composers they represent, and more and more people are becoming fans. The Facebook pages are the best way for companies and composers to keep in touch with their fans, and get news updates out quickly.
Two Steps From Hell's fan page reached 5,000 fans the other day (currently the number is at 5,030). This is quite an extraordinary achievement considering most people don't even think twice about where the music in trailers comes from. Today Thomas Bergersen thanked their fans for all of their support.
While I find it pretty amazing, it really should be no surprise. Trailers are seen worldwide, and the fan base for trailer music reaches across the globe. Of course, 5,000 fans might not seem like a lot when you compare it to the almost 95,000 fans of Hans Zimmer. However, trailer music isn't at the same level of awareness as film music is...
...yet.

Honestly, I'm not sure that it ever will be, but 5,000 fans is definitely a step in the right direction. Here are the numbers on a few other pages:
- Two Steps From Hell: 5,030
- Immediate Music: 3,572
- E.S. Posthumus: 3,004
- X-Ray Dog: 2,308
- Globus: 1,879
- Future World Music: 842
- Audiomachine: 835
- Groove Addicts-Full Tilt: 561
- Epic Score: 551
- City of the Fallen: 208
More and more companies are considering commercial releases, so who knows how much higher these numbers will be in a year? It's been fun to see the growth of the fanbase over the years. You are the reason there have been more public releases, and you are the reason we post news, conduct interviews, and write articles. So congratulations are indeed in order. I second Thomas: you rock! Thank you all for supporting trailer music, and keep on watching those trailers!
Now how about maybe becoming a fan of our Facebook page? ;)

Compagnies keep saying that Trailer music isn't for public, but for professionals.
But in the end, when a track is used on a trailer, the target is everyone, and it's natural that when you like a cue, you are looking for it. The best exemple is TSFH.
Everytime a new trailer comes out with their music, a load of peoples comes on facebook saying how they discovered them, and on youtube, searching for more of them.
The fact composers starts to release their music for public proves that things are changing.
It's not that they didn't want before, it's just that they came into the buisness, saw how it works ans did it. Some years ago, that kind of music was not that popular, so they would'nt have sold many albums with public releases. But now, with sites like facebook, we have direct contact with them, and them with us. Sites like youtube also helped, since I personally discovered Two Steps on it.
New thing for them too is that they have a feedback now. And they are really happy with it (see their facebook pages). So I think now, they realise that we like the music, because this music was made for us in the end. It's made to lead us to the movie, but fact is it lead some of us to Trailer Music compagnies too ;)
Now it's jut my opinion, it's how I see things today.
Yeah, there's definitely a difference between music for advertising and film scores. I do think there's a potential market out there. I think people that like film music, or video game scores, might also like trailer music. There's Globus as well, which might appeal to rock music fans. I'm always surprised by the people that like trailer music, when introduced to it. It really appeals to a wide audience, hence why trailerhouses want this type of music in their trailers. Off of what you said DP, I think part of the appeal of trailer music is it's song like structure. It has a beginning, middle, and an end, and is more similar to pop music, or classical, than film scores. This is why it's well suited for rock adaptations, like Globus has done. Trailer music definitely hasn't gone mainstream yet, because it's not really a style people know much about.
Also, if the companies don't want people to like their music, they wouldn't have Facebook pages. I'm sure some are less willing to reach out to the public, but for those that are, the more fans the better. So spread the word!
And thanks DP.
Whoa! We've got smilies! Sweet...
Don't forget the difference between motion picture scores and music for advertising. Or for the last one more specific: Trailer Music. Trailer Music goes for a climax (most of the time) whereas scores don't (most of the time). Scores underscore a certain scene: action, comedy, drama, thriller, etc.
However, many Trailer Music companies have changed their style and TSFH is a good example of adding a new dimension to Trailer Music: elements of a score.
So I agree with the fact that not everyone who likes scores will like Trailer Music but this could grow in the upcoming years. Like the numbers show, it has already grown the last couple of years.
Anyway, Congratz TSFH and I just became a fan of TMN ;)
Not everybody who likes scores like TM aswell. Altough Zimmer's music is similar to trailer music style so his fans can be potential TM fans, I guess.
I find it funny that you consider this surprising. Way too few fans, way too few.
Now every Hans Z. fan just needs to get a little more awareness of TM, and we'll be another big step in the worldwide recognition of TM!
Although I don't really think the companies would like that. Or maybe they do. It's a double-sided matter...
