How does Trailer Music inspire you?

I read a recent comment on Thomas Bergersen's Nemesis II blog that I found pretty cool. Here it is:

Elliott wrote to Thomas this:

Thomas, I thought you might find it interesting where some of your music is being listened to, am currently deployed overseas and me and some of my buddies use TFSH music to psyche ourselves when we need to get encouraged…it’s very inspiring music and no matter which side of the political spectrum someone identifies with regards to this war, your music helps gives us a boost everyday to do our jobs. Don’t worry, it’s not being mass copied and distributed across the 4th Infantry Division or anything, it’s just some of us in my team that like soundtrack music…it’s great during helo hops! Our favorite is the Legend Promo, the second movement is awesome! :D

Trailer music obviously can have a bigger impact on people's lives than one might imagine.  Yoav Goren touched on this in our interview with him.  This personal anecdote in particular is a really great example of that.  Of course, the point of music in trailers is to make you want to see the film.  Yet if it accomplishes this when put to picture, what does it accomplish when listened to on its own?

I thought I'd take this opportunity to ask, why do you listen to trailer music?  Does it inspire you?  Does it relax you?  Has your routine changed since you first began listening to trailer music?  Has your life changed?

Now, the last time we asked this question no one responded!  I know someone out there must have something to say. ;)

I just love the choir mixes on some of the songs and the epic rush at the end of songs like Blade Blade from Two steps from hell when you listen to it in the prince of persia trailer its just such an adrenaline rush and it makes you want to do something epic. I love it when a song gives me the goosebumps i just give my self a quiet smile because I know the song is epic. It hasnt really Changed My life in any particular way though I am nervous everytime I watch a trailer now Because Im always trying to figure out you know what music is in what trailer. It is kind of distracting sometimes though even during school sometimes the tune of a song like Freedom Fighters will just creep in and I can hear the song so clearly as though I was actually listening to it on my ipod. I think trailer music is one of those special genres where anything is possible there is not limit on what can be created it is just an amazing genre and I wish It was just as popular as rock or hip hop because it truly deserves the recognition it may have a small fan base but as companys enter the public domain its going to be amazing to see how many new fans they get maybe they will begin to release albums on a regular bases who knows But all in all I can say that Im glad I discovered this genre when I did about a year and a half ago by accident actually which was the funny thing I cant wait to see what comes up next :) remember when in doubt always listen to trailer music.

Very interesting to read the responses!  Thanks guys!  I know what you mean DP, about not being able to put it into words.  Even Mr. Goren said that.  Music is so unique in how it affects us, it's hard to verbalize.  That's neat Bright, and TwoStepsFromHellFan, that you listen to Trailer music to help you work.  I have a friend that does the same thing.

I'd feel like a hypocrite not answering my own question!  So here goes..

Trailer Music has changed my life as well because I wrote the article above.  If I'd never been introduced to Immediate Music, I'd be sleeping right now.  Notwithstanding that, I'd like to think trailer music has changed my life for the better. :)

In all seriousness, for me, trailer music is an inspiration for me musically.  When I heard the first tracks of trailer music played to me, something clicked, and I felt a deep connection with this style of music.  It inspired me me to begin composing, and now I'm minoring in music.  Trailer music helped me come to realize how music had always been an important part of my life.  Currently, I have about 30 compositions I'm working on, and that's all thanks to being introduced to trailer music.  It inspires me, and it's something I aspire to.

It's also fun to listen to.  I can't say that it inspires me when I'm working or make films, but I what I can say is that there's something about this style that really speaks to me personally.  There's no way I can even begin to explain why or how.

I myself, like to draw. Distant worlds, large spaceships, strange creatures, mysterious buildings... You name it, the list goes on. Trailer music is my main inspiration for those things, because it is in a broad spectrum. Whenever I listen to something horror-ish like the Saw soundtrack, I start to draw things like pointy landscapes, or creatures with lots of teeth. Drama music like Legend from TSFH makes me think of space battles, or something with lots of.... DRAMA... >:)

Really, the list is endless, but I love drama music the most, then comes action, and then comes horror. (call me weird for that :P)

Anyways, it's also nice to listen to in the train to my school everyday. (except the weekends of course :P) EPIC. TRAIN. TO. EPIC. SCHOOL. WITH. EPIC. HOMEW..... No wait, homework isn't epic.

I dropped my latin though, I felt like it was a bit too much, shame when 90% of the choirs in your music sings in Latin.

Welcome to Hell Heaven! It's pretty interesting down up here!

For me, I use trailermusic mostly to relax. e.g. in the bus, on the couch, on the computer...

When I listen to it, I immediately start to imagine something that fits to the music. Like DP already said, I imagine an epic battlefield or the glorious return of a hero :P. There are so many different styles inside TM that the variety of things to imagine is extremly big. Everytime I listen to a piece, I "daydream" about sth else.
I agree with DP that TM and OSTs helps me from time to time to escape reality and just enjoy the beautiful melodies and powerful choirs... that's my way to forget about my sorrows and problems (there are people who do this with alcohol)

Furthermore especially the fantasy and drama tracks inspire me when I'm photoshopping ;) - without music, this doesn't really work for me ;)

I think what is realy effects people is the choir itself. Just thinking of that dozens of people (or on a concert there could be thousands of people) singing the same time it's very powerful. Probably you can not value this video, because it's a hungarian folk song, but when the audience start singing it's really a thrill for me and it makes clear what I am thinking of. I hope :)

I think that's a very interesting thing to ask from us. I will try to say how I feel about it, though I am not sure I can describe everything in words... But once again, I'll try.

Soundtrack music was the music that touched me. I think that's because of the moods it's written for. I prefer the orchestral drama, action and suspense themes. Now... somewhere in... I believe it's 2002 or 2003? I got in touch with trailer music. And at that moment, yes it did changed my life. Trailer music's origins lie in the hybrid cues going for an incredible climax. Everyone liked that in the beginning. Now themes are getting longer and for example Two Steps From Hell tries to add a new certain dimension to this music. The amount of trailer music fans is growing and growing. Each individual probably has it's own reasons for listening it and each individual get's inspired on his or her own way. The first thing I like about trailer music is the way it's creating suspense and creates a mood for me. There is only one genre of music I listen to these days, or two I guess: Trailer music and soundtracks (motion picture scores). Second, I believe the essence of the natural instruments (and yes not every company creates natural sounds) make such a pure sound, which satisfies my ears time after time. The percussion which create rythm, the strings which create tension and drama, the blowinstruments which create clear visions of huge battle fields or epic fights. So trailer music inspires... ...my fantasy, my mood and thus my life. Trailer music opens a world for me I can jump into when I want to escape from reality... Only trailer music can do this to me... and that's what makes it valuable for me.

Hmm I typed a lot for my doing :P.
